Thirty years after the pastoral letter of 1996, the Hungarian Catholic Bishops’ Conference has published a new document, called “A more just and fraternal world!” addressed “once again to all people of good will who feel responsible for the future of our Church and our nation and who are willing to commit themselves to renewing them”, the Bishops’ write in the foreword. The text expresses a plurality of voices, because each theme, and therefore each chapter, has been drawn up by a different Bishops’ Conference body. It is a call “to dialogue, to shared reflection and to common action”, it goes on, with no ready-made solutions, but with “the wisdom and the light of the Gospel, with humbleness and in the awareness of our human frailty”. Divided into 8 chapters, the over 60 pages of the pastoral letter speak of “our wonderful humanity”, of family, “the home of love and the cradle of life”, of a more just and human economy, of education, learning and culture. A chapter is focussed on “love and justice in public life” and one on “the Care of Creation”. Chapter number seven speaks of “the situation of young people and the renewal of our communities”, while the last one addresses the issue of “the spiritual renewal of society”. In the last pages, the Bishops make a call for dialogue and joint responsibility, asking the ecclesial and civil communities to take responsibility for the weaker ones.
