In many dioceses, bishops are calling on priests and believers to join them in celebrations and prayers for the late Pope Francis. In Reykjavik, Bishop David Tencer will preside over a special commemorative Eucharist and prayer for the soul of Pope Francis at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Landakot at 6pm today. Archbishop Paolo Pezzi of Moscow has asked all priests to celebrate a Mass of suffrage for the repose of the late Pontiff’s soul. He also asked that condolence books be opened at the Cathedral of Moscow, the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in St. Petersburg, the Church of St. Adalbert in Kaliningrad, and in all commemorative churches. All the bishops of the Hungarian Catholic Bishops’ Conference will celebrate a Mass of suffrage at St Stephen’s Basilica in Budapest tomorrow, Wednesday 23 April, at 6pm. In the Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Lord in Novosibirsk, Bishop Josip Werth already celebrated a Mass for the late Pope Francis last night, together with Auxiliary Bishop Stefan Lipke. On the diocese’s website, he wrote that Masses of suffrage will be held in all Catholic churches in Russia. In Malta, Archbishop Charles Scicluna will celebrate a Mass of suffrage at St John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta at 6.30pm today, “so that the Lord may welcome Pope Francis into his bosom and grant him the fullness of peace, love and joy with Him in heaven”. The Mass will be broadcast live on television. In his message to the faithful following the death of Pope Francis, Bishop Raimo Goyarrola of Helsinki asked that a Mass of suffrage be celebrated at 6pm today in all parishes of the country. “I ask you to participate or join in prayer, so that, with your prayers, you may accompany Pope Francis on his journey to the house of the Father”.
