EU Parliament: Europe is Ukraine’s first ally. Support for ceasefire and “coalition of the willing”

(Strasbourg) The European Union as Ukraine’s primary strategic ally; continued support for Kyiv’s right to self-defence; support for the ceasefire proposal, in the hope that Russia will accept it; support for the “coalition of the willing” for a European-led enforcement of an eventual peace agreement; and an acceleration of Ukraine’s accession talks. These are some of the points of the non-binding resolution adopted today by the European Parliament in Strasbourg by 442 votes in favour, 98 against and 126 abstentions. Parliament “welcomes the Ukraine-US joint statement on 11 March, including the resumption of military assistance and intelligence sharing”, the text reads. MEPs reaffirm that the EU and its Member States “are now Ukraine’s primary strategic allies and must maintain their role as the largest donor” following an “apparent shift” in the US position on Russia’s war of aggression, “which has included openly blaming Ukraine for the ongoing war”. To uphold Ukraine’s right to self-defence, the EU and its member States must “significantly increase their much-needed assistance to the country”.
