Germany: the new pastoral website for German-speaking communities living abroad is online now

One’s native language plays a key role in pastoral care, as much in Germany as in any other part of the world. The Catholic Secretariat for International Relations of the German Bishops’ Conference coordinates such pastoral service for German-speaking people living abroad. The Catholic Secretariat for International Relations financially supports about 90 German-speaking communities and parishes from Cape Town to Copenhagen, from Sydney to Mexico City, and places about 40 priests in charge of pastoral services all over the world. In addition, the Catholic Secretariat for International Relations is responsible for German-speaking pilgrims’ pastoral care in Jerusalem, Rome, Lourdes, Fatima and Santiago de Compostela, as well as pastoral care on cruise ships. Now, proposals and contacts for German-speaking communities living abroad are presented in an easily accessible way on the website www.auslandsseelsorge.de which hosts the “miteinander” magazine (with each other), which tells about the life of the local communities. Pilgrims walking along the Way of St James or going to Jerusalem can enquire about the pastoral services that are available there in German. The Catholic Secretariat for International Relations is accredited with the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth as a provider of a so-called “Other international service”. “In times in which many people feel that the world is distancing itself, our German-speaking communities act as a home and as a spiritual community. They allow people to experience our worldwide Church in a special way and build bridges between Germany and their host countries”, Mgr. Peter Lang, head of the Catholic Secretariat, stated.
