Spain: 2024 tax returns, 382 million to the Catholic Church. Contributions on the rise

This week, the Spanish Episcopal Conference received from the national tax authorities the provisional data about the season of 2024 tax returns for the fiscal year 2023. According to such provisional data, the number of returns “supporting” the Catholic Church has increased by 208,841 euros compared to the previous year, with over 7.8 million taxpayers marking an “X” on their tax returns (the way people in Spain can assert their right to assign part of their personal income tax to the Catholic Church), which is equivalent to 30.43% of the submitted tax returns. If we include joint tax returns, then the number of taxpayers choosing to assign part of their tax to the Spanish Church rises up to 9 million, the highest number ever reported in the Spanish system. Also according to the data published by the Spanish authorities, the total amount assigned to the Catholic Church in 2024 is 382,437,998 euros, a sum that is 23.6 million euros higher (6.6% higher) than that of the previous fiscal year. On average, every taxpayer who marked an “X” assigned 42.5 euros. Such provisional data show that the total number of tax returns supporting the Church has increased in 16 of the 17 autonomous communities, especially in Andalusia, Madrid, Valencia and Castilla-La Mancha. Based on the assigned amounts, the contribution made by all autonomous communities has increased: in absolute terms, the greatest increases in terms of assigned euros have been reported in Madrid, in Andalusia and in Catalonia.
