EU: anticorruption rules enforced. McGrath, “this is about protecting the integrity of our democracies”

“Corruption undermines our democracies and the security of our societies. These new rules are a vital part of our commitment to upholding the rule of law”, Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President Commission, stated about the new anti-corruption rules that were enforced in the EU yesterday. “Together with our upcoming EU Anti-Corruption Strategy, they send a clear message: this Commission will take decisive action against those who betray public trust.”. Michael McGrath, Commissioner for Democracy and Justice, added: “Corruption is not a victimless crime. It drains public resources, distorts fair competition, and erodes citizens’ trust in democratic institutions. With these new rules, we are strengthening our ability to prevent corruption, pursue those responsible more effectively, and ensure a more consistent approach across the EU. This is about protecting the integrity of our democracies and ensuring that public power is always exercised in the public interest.”
