Bulgaria: election. Grigorova (analyst), “for Europe, Radev will be the new Fico. It will not be easy to govern”

(Sofia) As regards the geopolitical model and pro-Russian stance of Rumen Radev, the landslide winner of yesterday’s general election in Bulgaria, political analyst Sibina Grigorova does not expect any dramatic changes: “I wouldn’t call him the new Orban, but he could become the new Robert Fico”, she said, referring to the Eurosceptic Slovak prime minister, “and Bulgaria is much more similar to Slovakia”. “The EU is extremely important for Bulgaria, not least as a source of financial support, and Radev will not call this into question”. According to the political analyst, “there will be more controversial statements in domestic politics, whilst in Brussels he will adopt more moderate positions”. A key issue for the next Bulgarian parliament will be the replacement of the chief prosecutor and the Supreme Judicial Council, the body responsible for appointing prosecutors and judges in the country. “To do this, a qualified majority – that is, 160 votes – is required, and yesterday Radev showed himself willing to discuss the matter with the liberals of “We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria”. “Both ordinary people and entrepreneurs feel that there is not enough rule of law in Bulgaria and that the judicial system is not functioning at all levels”. However, Grigorova notes that “it will not be easy for Radev to govern amidst these ongoing economic crises”. “To bring about change”, she added, “targeted reforms are needed, and time will tell whether he is able to deliver them”.
