Spain: Caritas, 44 thousand homeless people supported in 2025. The “A home, a place to belong to” campaign

44,475 are the homeless people that were supported by Caritas Spain in 2025, 3.8% more than the year before: a figure that reflects a “deep and lasting” social and housing crisis, fuelled by loss of work, the cost of housing, evictions and forced displacement. Ahead of World Homeless Day that is held on October 25th, the organisation launched the “A home, a place to belong to” campaign, which will be held for the fourth year on end and will involve people who do or did experience such situation. “Repeated breaches of fundamental rights are pushing many people into more and more extreme forms of social exclusion”, María Santos, in charge of the campaign for Caritas Spain, stated. “Despite continuing to support their social rehabilitation, we find they are having serious problems in having access to basic rights such as housing, healthcare, employment, social welfare or civic engagement”. The campaign recalls the value of community, connections and belonging, pointing out that such phenomenon does not only affect people who sleep in the streets but also people who live in unsafe or inadequate houses. Most of the initiatives will take place on October 22nd in squares and streets all over Spain, with the reading of a manifesto developed by homeless people along with the people who support them.
