Germany: Intercultural Week, initiative by Catholic, Evangelical and Orthodox Churches. “Democracy and bridges between people”

The Intercultural Week (IKW) will start its 50th-anniversary celebrations on 21 September, with thousands of events taking place all across Germany. The IKW was launched in 1975 by the German Bishops’ Conference (DBK), the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), and the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Germany. The Churches continue to support the IKW today, together with municipalities, associations, trade unions, schools, migrant organisations, and religious communities. The motto for the IKW 2025 is “For!”. “The Intercultural Week responds to growing distrust and fear, exclusion, open racism and to the rejection of people with a migrant background with a clear statement: We Are For – For every single person!”, wrote the President of the German Bishops’ Conference, Msgr. Georg Bätzing, the President of the EKD Council, Bishop Kirsten Fehrs, and Augustinos from the Greek Orthodox Metropolis, in their joint statement on Intercultural Week. The Church leaders emphasised: “We must not get tired of fighting for our democracy and building bridges between people”. They added: “The reception of refugees has repeatedly put our society to the test. Such challenges must be addressed politically. Through appropriate regulations and resources, states and municipalities must be enabled both to meet their obligations in the reception of refugees, and to ensure security and order in the country”. The proposed dates for the IKW are from 21 to 28 September. “Refugee Day” will take place on 26 September.
