Kosovo: parliamentary elections. Mr Krastev (analyst) to SIR, “isolated and poor country. Difficult relations with Serbia”

“In the last four years of the Kurti government, Pristina fell into isolation”, Nikolaj Krastev said, commenting on the outcome of the elections in Kosovo. “The prime minister challenged the United States, and the EU and Brussels cut funds by at least €150 million due to tensions with the Serbian minority”. Mr Krastev explains that “the crux of the matter is the so-called Association of Serb Municipalities, which was supposed to be created several years ago, but Mr Kurti insisted on doing it differently, and Belgrade did not accept it”. “His policy is one of confrontation rather than cooperation with the Serbian minority. Mr Kurti closed the post offices that existed in the Serb-majority region and prevented the locals from receiving their salaries from Belgrade in Serbian currency, the dinar”. The political expert adds: “With a different prime minister, the issue of normalising relations may take a different turn”. Meanwhile, the other political parties refrain from commenting on the possibility of taking part in a coalition.
