It was the Greek Orthodox priest Issa Thaljieh from the Church of the Nativity of Bethlehem who unveiled the interactive online Advent calendar prepared by the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales. It speaks of the pain endured in the last few months of the war as well as hope and of God’s presence amidst so much pain. By clicking on each date until December 24th, one can listen to reflections of Bishops and people from British Catholic charities. For Advent, Cafod, the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, offers prayers, liturgies and reflections for Catholic families, schools and parishes that may be useful in a number of situations, such as emergencies, famine, the loss of a beloved one. On its website, Cafod also tells the story of Mariam, a 72-year-old Lebanese mother who is struggling heating herself and asks for donations for herself. The Catholic Agency for Overseas Development also proposes a number of gifts in the form of cards that can be printed at home or ordered online, that buy food as well as educational materials, literacy courses, medical care and access to clean water for families living in developing countries. Finally, on its website, the ecumenical charity “Christian Aid” proposes a digital Advent calendar and tells stories of poverty and suffering, and asks for donations.
