Portugal, food banks, food collection campaign all over the country on May 25th and 26th. Jonet, “a difficult time for families”

The Portuguese Federation of Food Banks against Hunger is organising a food collection campaign on May 25th and 26th, calling on Portuguese people’s solidarity. The motto chosen for the campaign, which is run by over 40,000 volunteers, is “Your help could be what a family’s table still needs”, the organisers write in a notice. Portuguese citizens can donate food in over 2,000 supermarkets all over the country and, in addition to next weekend’s campaign, the food collection campaign will go on until June 2nd through coupons available in supermarkets and on the online channel www.alimentestaideia.pt. The Federation of Food Banks is asking for donations from private people, encouraging them to share food “that is part of the family table, according to one’s means, in a gesture of solidarity that takes a communal character and aims at improving the lives of struggling families”. According to Isabel Jonet, president of the Portuguese Federation of Food Banks against Hunger, “such campaigns are very important to collect basic food and mobilise society as a whole, especially at a time in which the situation is still quite difficult for many families”. Last year, the country’s food banks helped approximately 360,000 people with established nutritional deficiencies, in partnership with over 2,400 charitable associations.
