EU: Brussels to host the conference on a “just” green transition. 19 billion euros from the EU budget

The ninth Just Transition Platform Conference will take place in Brussels tomorrow. Organised by the EU Commission, this two-day event will bring together over 1,000 participants from the EU regions that benefit from the Just Transition Fund (JTF) “to discuss the progress made on the field and share the best practices that have proven to have added value in selected transitioning regions of the EU”. Discussions will focus on the progress made, ”using factual examples of JTF-funded projects and will deal with the future of just transition and the way regions can make the most of the available funds”. Specific sessions will be spent on young people’s involvement in just transition, creating energy communities, and how to improve workers’ skills for a green future. The Conference will be opened by Elisa Ferreira, Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, and Kadri Simson, Commissioner for Energy; then, Commissioner Ferreira and the parties concerned from different regions will discuss the results achieved so far and the current status of the process. Commissioner Simson, who will send a pre-recorded video, “will emphasise the need for involving citizens in the spreading of sources of renewable energy in the EU”. On Wednesday, Nicolas Schmit, Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights, will close the conference and, according to sources from the EU Commission, “will highlight the importance of developing workers’ skills to reap the fruits of green transition”. The EU provides 19.2 billion euros to regions undergoing a green transition.
