Today marks World Mental Health Day which is intended to draw attention to the fact that “mental health is just as important as our physical health”, European Commissioner for Health, Stella Kiriakides, said in a statement. To build healthier, more inclusive societies, it is imperative to break down the stigma on mental health, so that people struggling with these difficulties do not feel isolated or discouraged from seeking the help they need. To break down the stigma, the Commission is about to launch a package to support initiatives and actions based on good practice, she explained. “We will work with national authorities to implement this initiative, and connect them with mental health advocacy groups, for inclusive and informed policy-making”. A total of €18 million in EU funding is already supporting projects related to mental health, recovery and inclusion. A soon-to-be-launched communication campaign “In This Together” will seek to challenge misconceptions and promote greater understanding and acceptance on mental health. Particular attention will be paid to schools and young people. By overcoming prejudice, “we are promoting dignity, equity and compassion for all, and allowing everyone to play their role in society”.
