EU: EESC, Brussels to host Civil Society Week 2026. “People, Democracy, Resilience. Our Future”

“People, Democracy, Resilience. Our Future”: this is the name of the third Civil Society Week that the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) will be organising in its Brussels premises from March 2nd to 5th. The context is that of “social and economic inequalities, rapid technological change, antidemocratic forces, and geopolitical instability”, the organisers explain, “that are undermining the foundations of the European project. That’s why two will be the main pillars which EESC intends to work on: on one hand, the general priority of the European Economic and Social Committee during the new term of its President, Séamus Boland, which revolves around “a Union of opportunities, a Union of security, and a Union of resilience”. The second pillar are three of the European Commission’s priorities, especially “supporting people and strengthening our societies”, “protecting our democracy, upholding our values”, “delivering together and preparing our Union for the future”. Each day will consist of high-profile debates, participatory sessions and interactive workshops. The official opening will be on Monday March 2nd at 10.00am with President Séamus Boland’s greetings, while the inaugural speech will be delivered by Katherine Zappone, formerly Ireland’s Minister for Children and Youth Affairs. The programme will include the European Citizens’ Initiative Day (Tuesday, March 3rd). The Civil Society Week will be attended by activists and youth organisation leaders, political decision-makers, journalists from EU countries and from candidate countries.
