Missio’s youth campaign has begun in Austria for the 51st time. In the coming weeks, thousands of pupils and young people will sell 310,000 fair trade chocolate boxes and 130,000 bags of “Happy Blue Chips” in parishes. Missio’s national director, Father Karl Wallner, expressed his joy at the participation of so many young people and their willingness to “take social responsibility and show their solidarity with the Church and with young people around the world”. The proceeds will go to both aid projects in various countries in the Global South and the work of Catholic Youth Austria. Since it was launched in 1974, the campaign has been held every year, combining justice, sustainability and fair trade with a concrete contribution to supporting the Church’s social and educational projects. According to Missio Austria, about €2.9 million has been raised over the past 20 years. Thousands of children participate every year, supporting the campaign in their schools, religious education courses and parish groups. This year, the proceeds will support projects in four regions of the world: South Sudan, Malawi, Sri Lanka, and the Brazilian Amazon region of the Archdiocese of Santarém. Missio chocolates are made from fair trade cocoa beans while the Happy Blue Chips come from a cooperative in the Peruvian Andes.
