All of Austria stopped today: at 10.00am sharp, people all over the country observed a minute of silence in remembrance of the victims of the shooting that took place in a secondary school in Graz, with ten people killed and at least twelve injured, some of whom still in critical condition. The silent commemoration was accompanied by the ring of church bells, a visible and audible sign of national mourning, prayer and sympathy for the victims. Three days of national mourning have been proclaimed. In Vienna, the Halbpummerin, the funeral bell on St Stephen’s Cathedral, rang a full peal, as did the other bells on the churches of central Vienna. In front of the Cathedral, many classrooms that were in St Stephen’s Square at that very moment joined in and observed a minute of silence in remembrance of the victims, before the astonished eyes of several tourists who were then informed of the reason for such act and the ring of the bells. Today, in the afternoon, Caritas organised the setting up of a sea of lights in St Stephen’s Square in remembrance of the victims. In one of today’s press releases, Klaus Schwertner, director of Caritas Vienna, pointed out: “Together, let’s light up thousands of candles today as a sign of this solidarity, of this union, of what we share. Let’s stick together and let’s be there for each other, especially now”.
