Spain: El Escorial, missionary meeting of young people. Three days “from tourists to pilgrims”

The Commission for Missions and Cooperation of the Spanish Bishops’ Conference, together with the Pontifical Mission Societies, is organising the 21st missionary meeting for young people from 16 to 18 May under the motto “From Tourists to Pilgrims”. The days are aimed at young people aged 18 to 35 and groups participating in missionary experiences. It is a “missionary space” – a statement explains – intended to “help participants to know, share and live the mystic of the mission”. The meeting will take place at the Maria Cristina University Centre (San Lorenzo de El Escorial). The aim of the event is to “help young people to deepen the missionary dimension of their faith, in an environment of fraternity, prayer, reflection and dialogue”, “so that they can discover the value of mission in the Church and may feel called to the ‘ad gentes’ mission”. The meeting will begin tomorrow with the welcoming of participants and delivery of material. Dinner will follow with an evening marked by the testimony and music of Alejandro Abrante, a “missionary singer and songwriter”. On Saturday morning, 17 May, Mgr Javier Vilanova, Auxiliary Bishop of Barcelona, will take the floor to illustrate the motto of the meeting “From Tourists to Pilgrims”. Participants will then make a pilgrimage to the Hermitage of La Virgen de Gracia, where the Eucharist will be celebrated. On Sunday morning, 18 May, the programme features the debate “Tourist or Pilgrim?”. Father José María Calderón will then give a speech about “The Pontifical Mission Societies (POM) in Missionary Animation”, after which the closing Mass will be celebrated.
