A one-year-long introductory course is offered in Finland to those who are thinking of joining the Church or wish to explore their knowledge of Christianity. The course is specially targeted at those who have no chance of attending courses organised by their parishes, as it takes place online. Over the year, the main contents of the Catholic faith are addressed through lectures, videos and discussions. The course, which began in late January and will go on until January 19th 2027, is held every two weeks with lessons, question and answer sessions, and exchanges of views in small groups, alternating with the delivery of materials for the lessons and moments of prayer. The course is led by Father Tuomas Nyyssölä, Father Martti Savijoki and Father Pedro Perez. The main text is the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Many parishes, as the note posted on the website of the diocese of Helsinki points out, organise in-presence courses too, and those who intend to join the Church need to contact their parish priest at the start of the course. “This initial contact”, the note points out, “is not a final decision about becoming Catholics and is not compulsory. However, it is important for any later joining process”.
