Bulgaria: evening in memory of the victims of communism. Special focus on repression against religious denominations

On 1 February at 6:00 p.m., an evening in memory of the victims of communism will be held at the Catholic Co-cathedral of St Joseph in Sofia, dedicated to the repression of religious denominations during the totalitarian regime. The event is jointly organised by the Belene Island Foundation and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. The evening will begin with a Eucharistic celebration. A discussion will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Tony Nikolov, editor-in-chief of the magazine Christianity and Culture, who will present a brief overview of the repression suffered by clergy members and lay people of all denominations. The topic will then be addressed in greater depth by Prof. Momchil Metodiev, who will focus on the victims of the Orthodox Church; by Father Paolo Cortesi, who will speak about the Catholic Church; and by Prof. Mihail Gruev, director of Bulgarian Archives State Agency, who will focus on Muslims. The Bulgarian Voices choir will perform a series of Orthodox religious songs followed by organ pieces. “The goal of the meeting is not only to remember the past but to transform memory into a living bridge to the present”, Alexander Gentchev, President of the Belene Island Foundation, told SIR news agency. “At a time of disorientation of values, the example of these martyrs of the faith reminds us that spiritual freedom is the most precious thing”.
