During the European Parliament’s plenary session, which opens today and runs until Thursday in Strasbourg, MEPs will address a number of issues of geopolitical importance, as well as other legislative matters of more direct and concrete application. Among these, MEPs will discuss, together with the Commission and the Council, the details of the trade agreement with the United States and the prospect of further agreements with other countries; new rules for reducing textile and food waste, and rules for the circularity of vehicles. Tomorrow, a large part of the sitting will be devoted to foreign and security policy issues. In the morning, MEPs and the High Representative for Foreign Policy, Kaja Kallas, will discuss security guarantees for Ukraine and the country’s path towards EU membership. During the debate, MEPs “are also expected to take stock of the outcome of US President Donald Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska during the summer, and the continued Russian bombardment of Ukrainian cities following the summit”, a statement reads. During the debate, MEPs will also discuss a report by the Foreign Affairs Committee which encourages the Ukrainian Government to continue implementing reforms towards EU membership. The text will then be voted on later in the day. A debate on Gaza with Kaja Kallas will follow. And a resolution will be put to a vote on Thursday. “Parliament has repeatedly called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, including the unconditional release of all hostages, and free access and sustained distribution of humanitarian and medical assistance in the Gaza Strip”.
