The Autumn Plenary Assembly of the German Bishops’ Conference (DBK) will be held in Fulda from 22nd to 25th September. It will be attended by fifty-eight members, led by their President, mgr. Georg Bätzing, Bishop of Limburg. The venue will be the Maritim Hotel am Schlossgarten Fulda. The focus of the deliberations – as the DBK specified – will be a study group that will thoroughly look into the results of the sixth survey of Church members and will review the options the Catholic Church has for its action, from a fundamental and pastoral theological perspective. During the plenary assembly, the Bishops will also discuss the current situation of sex abuse investigations, litigations and trials, as well as the progress of the synodal way of the Church in Germany. Other items on the agenda include the situation in the Middle East, pastoral care during the 2020 pandemic, and the relationship between the Catholic Church and the Sinti and Roma during the Nazi period. The plenary assembly will also deal with a German Bishops’ statement on military and volunteer service. The apostolic nuncio, Archbishop Nikola Eterović, will attend the opening session of the plenary assembly. The opening Eucharistic celebration will be held in Fulda Cathedral. The morning of Wednesday 24th will be focussed on a debate on “We can make it: On the side of protection seekers – Catholic help to refugees in 2015-2025 as a contribution to the challenges of migration”. In addition, data on the work of the German Catholic Church for migrants and asylum seekers will be analysed too.
