The Bishops, who are members of the Subcommittee for Charity and Social Action of the Spanish Episcopal Conference, have published their message for the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation which the Church is celebrating today, Monday 1st September. So, this year too, the Iberian Church is joining the call to celebrate the “Season of Creation” that starts on 1st September with a Day of Prayer and ends on 4th October with the Feast of St Francis of Assisi. In their message – titled “Seeds of peace and hope in the common home” – the Spanish Bishops linger, first and foremost, on “Peace with Creation” by calling to “reflect on the importance of justice among humans and harmony with nature, while acknowledging that human wellbeing is intrinsically related to the wellbeing of our planet, our common home”. A “clear proof of the broken harmony with nature and creation is the ‘ecological debt’ between the north and the south of the world”. An ecological debt that is irrefutably related to “financial debt”, as they are “two sides of the same coin that stake a claim on the future of the indebted countries, that are forced to give up their investments in education, health, infrastructure and climate resilience to pay their creditors”. Therefore, the Spanish Bishops call to look at the “Jubilee Year as at an opportunity to respond to such injustice”. “Debt relief should not be regarded as an act of generosity but as an act of justice”. According to the Bishops, “the time has come to build bridges of inclusion, by working for an ecological, social and environmental justice among rich and poor countries”.
