Jubilee of Youth: Madrid, initiatives to self-finance the pilgrimage. Guided tours, T-shirts and car washes

All through the academic year, the over 3,000 young people from the diocese of Madrid who will be attending the Jubilee of Youth in Rome have contrived a few ways to self-finance and cover the cost of the pilgrimage. As part of such initiatives – as reported by the website of Madrid’s archdiocese – the boys and girls sold T-shirts, organised car wash services before and after Sunday Mass as well as, and this is the case of the youth group of the parish church of Santa Cruz, coming up with guided tours of the church, followed by a climb up its bell tower, the perfect place to enjoy a 360-degree scenic view of Madrid’s old city centre. The latter idea was born when a group of eleven boys and girls, along with their parish priest, father Alberto Andrés, signed up for the Jubilee of Youth last February. Because of the cost of taking part in the event, “we decided to look for alternative options”, young Jorge, a pilgrim, said. “We started to sell holy cards at the end of Mass but we realised that would not work”. Then, they thought of the bell tower. Located at the heart of the Spanish capital, the bell tower stands at a height of 60 metres. The young parishioners – the web page of Madrid’s archdiocese goes on – then worked out with an itinerary, in which, while climbing up the bell tower, the guides stop a few times along the way to let the visitors enjoy a view of the nave of the church from above, with the shrine that hosts the relic of the “Holy Cross”; then, a first terrace offering a glimpse of the surroundings, the bells, the clock and the carillon, and then up to the main terrace at the top of the monument. Such initiative has attracted visitors from all over Madrid and beyond.
