The young people of Youth Net who attended the meeting in Budapest engaged with experts on the situation of migrants in the societies of EU member states. Then, according to a statement that goes with the document “Migration and asylum policies in the EU: a focus on integration”, they discussed “the characteristics of successful integration, national strategies for screening and securitisation, the need for robust integration policies to prevent parallel societies, and the importance of addressing the root causes of migration”. The first section of the document, which deals with “Migrants in the process of integration”, reads like this: “The European Commission’s Action Plan on Integration and Inclusion 2021 – 2027 emphasizes a “two-way process” for a positive integration of migrants in our societies. It highlights that successful integration of migrants involves the opportunities host societies should create whereby migrants can participate economically, socially, culturally and politically and the adaptation of migrants in their host society”.

A section is named: “Integrating migrants through vocational fulfilment and human dignity”. It says: “The Social Doctrine of the Catholic Church highlights the deep connection between work and human dignity, asserting that immigration can serve as a resource to the host country for development when migrants fill labour needs unmet by the local workforce. Underutilising the skills and qualifications or limiting access to work opportunities for migrants not only restricts their personal growth but also deprives society of valuable potential and positive contribution. Therefore, in the interest of host countries themselves, they should continue to facilitate the recognition of foreign qualifications and offer tailored vocational training, enabling migrants to engage in work that truly reflects their skills and aspirations”.
