Serbia: student-led protests. Krastev (analyst), “protesters have embraced civil disobedience”

After a new wave of protests over the weekend in Serbia, protesters are now calling for early elections. Protesters themselves have now embraced civil disobedience, consisting in blockades of roads, slowing down traffic, and sending thousands of emails to clog the institutions. “For the students, the government is now illegitimate”, Balkan analyst Krastev explained. “President Aleksandar Vučić believes that police officers have acted very professionally and accuses protesters of inciting violence and attacking the police. “There will be more arrests for those who break the law”, said the Serbian President, qualifying the student’s actions as “terrorism”. In the meantime, numerous videos have appeared on social media with police officers bragging about beating up protesters. According to Krastev, “Serbia risks becoming the North Korea of Europe if something does not change on the political stage”. In his view, “Vučić fears new elections because he may not secure a majority”. According to data from the Serbian magazine “New Serbian Political Thought”, 60% of the population support the protesters’ demands, while 32% oppose them. And “44% want young people to engage in a political project together with the current opposition”, Krastev concluded. The scholar notes that “Brussels’ tone towards Belgrade’s authorities has also changed”. “European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos met some of the protesters in Belgrade some time ago and expressed support for some of their demands”.
