Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, and political group leaders are in Copenhagen today to prepare the forthcoming Danish presidency of the Council of the European Union (second half of 2025). The European Parliament leaders will meet with Mette Frederiksen, Denmark’s Prime Minister. Then, they will have an audience with King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark and will meet with the Folketinget, i.e. the Danish Parliament. “War in Ukraine, the climate crisis, and global trade tensions are putting significant strain on the EU’s capacity to act”, a statement from Brussels explains. “On 1 July, Denmark assumes the Presidency of the Council of the EU, taking on a central role in shaping the direction of the Union”. The meeting between European Parliament leaders and Danish politicians will allow them to discuss the priorities of the upcoming Danish presidency. Metsola stated: “Denmark takes the EU steering wheel at a time of war on our continent, global trade tensions and economic pressure. Security, sustainability and competitiveness are the right focus. From strengthening our defence to cutting red tape for business, from energy security to digital leadership – Europe must act”.
