The Subcommittee for charitable and social action of the Spanish Episcopal Conference is organising the Day of Charity next Sunday, under the motto “As long as there are people, there is hope”. The event is promoted as part of Jubilee Year which is actually focussed on hope. The message published by the Spanish Episcopal Conference points out, firstly, that “the Day of Charity, organised to celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi, is particularly significant because, as veritable pilgrims of Hope, we are called to get on our way, identify with His life plan and give our lives for those who live a ‘non-life’”. The message spotlights the problem of rising violence in today’s world as a threat to hope and social charity. “The war, the utmost expression of violence, is devastating many corners of the world: the Holy Land, Ukraine, the Caucasus, the Horn of Africa…. In Europe, and even in our country, access to dignified housing has become a social emergency for those who live below the poverty line. Isn’t this a form of structural violence too?”. Also according to the Spanish Episcopal Conference, the answer to this climate of distrust and fear for the future is precisely by getting on “the path of hope that in this Jubilee Year takes on a special meaning for Christians and becomes a path of pilgrimage, in search of that hope that mankind needs to find again”.
