UK: Liverpool, car hitting the crowd. Christian leaders: “appalled and saddened, united in prayer”

“We are appalled and saddened by what happened in Liverpool at the players’ parade celebrating their Premier League victory. People who only wanted to participate in what should have been an unforgettable moment now find themselves facing trauma and pain that will forever cast a shadow over this day”. With these words contained in a statement issued by the ecumenical organisation “Churches Together in Merseyside”, Christian leaders in Liverpool expressed their sorrow at the shock and panic that engulfed the city yesterday when a car ploughed into a crowd of fans celebrating Liverpool’s Premier League victory. “The full circumstances have yet to be ascertained and this is not the time to make assumptions or speculations. Instead, let us come together as a community and hold those caught up in this dreadful incident in our thoughts and prayers”. The statement, that also contains a prayer, is signed by the new Archbishop of Liverpool John Sherrington, who succeeds Archbishop Malcolm McMahon, by Anglican Bishop Ruth Worsley, Reverend Phil Jump, responsible for the Baptist Churches, and Reverend James Tebbutt representing the Methodist Churches. “Without wishing to belittle the tragedy that has struck our city, let us remember that this is an isolated incident, and our city will always be defined by all that this parade was intended to epitomise. We will never walk alone”, the statement ends.
