Safety and Health at Work: Eurostat, accidents decreased from 2017 to 2022, except for health and care work, education, building

To celebrate today’s World Day for Safety and Health at Work, Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Union, posted a few figures on workplace accidents by comparing figures from 2017 to 2022. In 2022, 2.97 million non-fatal workplace accidents resulted in at least 4 days’ sick leave in the EU, which is 4.6% (-143,031) less than in 2017. However, 27.4% of accidents entailed 7-13 days’ sick leave, 18.8% resulted in 4-6 days’ sick leave, 13.3% 1 to 3 months’ sick leave, and 4.5% led to over 183 days’ sick leave or a permanent disability. Also in 2022, 3,286 fatal accidents were reported (0.1% of total accidents). The manufacturing industry reported the highest number of accidents in 2022, with 535,977 accidents (18% of the total), followed by health and care work (469,764; i.e. 15.8%) and building (364,486; i.e. 12.2%). Most economic sectors reported a decrease in the number of accidents from 2017 to 2022, except for health and care work (+133,470 accidents), education (+15,432) and building (+11,232).
