The European Health Data Space (EHDS) will enter into force on 26 March and will be officially presented by the European Commission and the Polish Presidency at a high-level conference in Brussels tomorrow. This system “will change the way we access and share health data in the EU”, the Commission explained in a statement, because “it will empower patients to take control of their electronic health records, and access and share their data in a secure and simple way, including in cross-border situations”. Health professionals, researchers and policymakers will also benefit from this new framework, for they will have access to more data, under strict safeguards and security conditions, to the benefit of patients, research and innovation. Indeed, the Regulation will ensure interoperability and safety. According to Commissioner for Health, Olivér Varhelyi, this is “a historic milestone” that paves the way for a future “where data will become key in improving the health prospects of all Europeans”. The commissioner himself will be opening the conference tomorrow, during which experts and stakeholders will focus on “key issues that will shape the future of the EHDS”: to build trust, the potential, and the next steps of the EHDS.
