On Tuesday, 11th March, the Seville Campus at Loyola University will be hosting an academic and social Day called “Debt or Development? Funding for development and the social doctrine of the Church”, promoted by the Department of Integral Ecology of the Spanish Episcopal Conference, the Archdiocese of Seville and the aforesaid University. As announced by the organisers, the event is one of the steps leading up to the IV UN International Financing for Development Conference that will take place in the Andalusian capital from 30th June to 3rd July this year. “The purpose of the meeting is to promote global economic justice, raise awareness of society at large and especially young people about the sufferings caused to many populations by inequality and structured debt, as well as promoting solutions inspired by the values of global solidarity and hope”. As written in the programme of the event, the Day will begin with a debate between Cardinal Peter K. A. Turkson (Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences) and Marta Pedrajas (expert in human development with a background working at the UN and the Holy See) about “Jubilee, foreign debt relief and the IV UN International Financing for Development Conference”. Two workshops will follow: “Economic and social impact of foreign debt” and “Ecological debt. Financing for climate change”. A statement about financing for development in the light of the social doctrine of the Church is expected to be published at the end of the meeting.
