In a joint call, youth organisations (associations, welfare agencies, ecclesiastical, environmentalist and labour institutions) ask the Democratic Parties to take measures for “a fair future with zero climate impact”. All of them are concerned that young people’s interests “may be widely ignored during the election campaign, where unrest and polarisation prevail”. 25 youth organisations ask for a social climate policy that “will be fair for all generations through a reform of debt brake, the promotion of sustainable mobility for everyone, and a strong climate protection programme”. As youth organisations, they represent the concerns of the future generations, who will be the ones that will have to live the longest with the effects of the political decisions of the next parliament. “Wide-ranging structural changes are long overdue, especially in the transport and building industries”, Gregor Podschun, Federal President of the Federation of German Catholic Youth (BDKJ), stated. “But climate protection must not be a matter of money”. Podschun insists that “the time of hesitations is over now: a strong climate protection programme must be the highest priority now. To ensure a fair future to all generations, it is essential that we quickly get rid of fossil fuels”.
