“We make a heart-felt call to stop the massacre in Goma and in the other areas of the Democratic Republic of the Congo that are in the grip of violence: stop it!”. This was stated by the Presidency of the Italian Bishops’ Conference (CEI), as it decried “a massacre that is taking a heavy toll, especially among civilians, without sparing children, even new-born babies, women and defenceless people”. CEI, the Italian Bishops’ Conference, expresses sympathy with the population and with those who are involved in an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, by embracing Pope Francis’s words: “I call on all conflicting parties to make every effort to cease hostilities and protect the civilian population in Goma and in the other areas affected by military operations”. In addition, the Pontiff called on “the local authorities and the international community to make every effort to resolve the conflict through peaceful means”. CEI pointed out that since 1991 it has been supporting projects in the Democratic Republic of the Congo worth 136 million euros and, using funds from the 0.8% religious tax, it has funded 1,236 projects in response to emergencies and for socioeconomic development: “To face this further emergency, we decided to allocate one million euros. Our commitment will never fail to promote human dignity and a peaceful future”.
