Last Saturday, a 23-year-old man stabbed some passers-by in the centre of Villach, in Carinthia, and killed one. According to Police, a 14-year-old boy died and five people were injured, many of them seriously. The attacker, a Syrian man working for a food delivery company with a right of residence in Austria, was arrested shortly afterwards. After the deadly attack, mgr. Josef Marketz, Bishop of Carinthia, voiced his dismay at such violent deed: “This terrible crime deeply upsets me and leaves many people angry and bewildered. My prayers and my thoughts go to the victims and their families”, the Bishop wrote in a release that was published yesterday. In addition, Marketz expressly called Carinthia’s society to be prudent and supportive: “This violent deed is a challenge to our society, many people are worried about the future and about security in our country”, stated Marketz, who also warned against “generalised assessments that help no one and solve no problems”. “For us, as a community, it is more important than ever that we keep calm and strengthen our solidarity”. On Sunday, Gerhard Karner, Minister of the Interior, stated in a press release in Villach that it had been an “ISIS-related Islamist attack”. The suspect had “radicalised himself in a very short span of time”. After the arrest, during the first questioning, the man stated he had acted in the name of the terrorist militia “Islamic State”.
