Following yesterday’s attack during the celebration of the Hanukkah Jewish Festival in Sydney, in which 15 people (including a girl) lost their lives and at least 50 were injured – many of whom are still hospitalised in serious condition across various Sydney hospital –, the Churches in Germany, too, expressed their shock and solidarity. “We are appalled by the attack in Australia. We mourn the innocent victims”, said the Bishop of Limburg, Mgr Georg Bätzing, President of the German Bishops’ Conference, who went on to add: “This horrific violence cannot be justified under any circumstances. Our solidarity goes to all Jews, especially at the beginning of the Hanukkah Festival”. Bishop Kirsten Fehrs, President of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany, stressed that “it is terrible that Jews around the world must once again fear for their safety, and it weighs heavily on me that such a heinous attack on the Jewish community in Australia took place at the beginning of the Festival of Lights, Hanukkah”.
