The Secretariat of the Spanish Bishops’ Conference presented a report on the activities of the Catholic Church in Spain for 2024. Among the most significant data in the report is the growing number of Baptisms administered several years after birth: in 2024 in Spain, almost 10% of those baptised (13,323 out of a total of 146,370) were over the age of seven. Also, the Spanish Church is among those with the largest number of missionaries and evangelisers in the world: the report shows that, in 2024, 9,648 Spanish priests, religious and lay people were present “in 1,131 mission territories across 133 countries”. Internally, while on the one hand there has been a decline in the number of priests (14,994, down from 15,285 in 2023), bishops (122, down from 119 in 2023) and consecrated religious (31,503, down from 32,531 in 2023), on the other hand, the report highlights the growing pastoral presence of 82,106 catechists (compared to 81,080 in 2023), 1,036 seminarians (957 in 2023) and 599 permanent deacons (587 in 2023). Another significant figure, that speaks volumes of the Church’s contribution to the common good in the health sector in Spain, is this: “882 chaplains and 18,832 volunteers serve in hospitals and make over 164,000 visits per month to the sick in their homes or in hospitals”. As for education, according to the Spanish bishops, the data show that “the educational work of the Church is indispensable in our society”, thanks to the 2,527 Catholic schools that welcomed 1,482,503 students in 2024.
