Spain: 2025 tax return, 429 million to the Catholic Church. Contributions up by 12%

The Spanish Bishops’ Conference has received provisional data from the national tax authorities for the 2025 tax return season, referring to the fiscal year 2024. According to the provisional figures released, the number of tax returns “in favour” of the Catholic Church was 7,946,347, which represents an increase of 106,363 compared to 2023. The amount allocated was €429,335,080, with an increase of €46.9 million, that is to say, 12%, compared to the previous year. Considering joint tax returns, over 9 million Spanish taxpayers have ticked the relevant box on their tax return forms (the mechanism that allows individuals in Spain to allocate a percentage of their income tax to the Catholic Church). At territorial level, the total number of tax returns in favour of the Catholic Church increased in 16 out of the 17 autonomous Spanish communities (particularly in Andalusia, Madrid, Valencian Community, and Castile-La Mancha). The only decline was registered in the Autonomous Community of Navarre, as well as in the province of Vizcaya, as was the case in the previous year.
