To mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (25 November), a debate will take place in Strasbourg tomorrow on the measures needed to address this “grave human rights violation that persists in Europe and around the world”. Indeed, this topic is on the agenda of the plenary session that begins today in the Alsatian city and continues until 27 November. Earlier this month, Parliament called for “stronger action on violence against women”. MEPs urged the Commission to propose the inclusion of gender-based violence as a particularly serious crime, to facilitate the application of the law on combating violence against women and domestic violence, and to recognise femicide as a distinct crime. Parliament will also participate in the UN’s “Orange the World” campaign “to end violence against women and girls” by “lighting its building in Strasbourg orange” tomorrow. Among the countless topics on the plenary agenda are: the protection of minors online; a final vote on the first European Defence Industry Programme; the new Digital Omnibus to update the EU corpus of digital legislation; “Hungary’s persistent rule of law failings”; a final vote on the 2026 budget; COP30 – a debate on the outcome of the climate change conference; an updated strategy for people with disabilities; escalation of the war and the humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan.
