EU Commission: towards a “military Schengen”. Military mobility and a stronger defence industry

“To make it easier for troops, equipment and military assets to move quickly and smoothly across Europe”, the European Commission and the High Representative “step up defence readiness, focusing on preparedness”, with a military mobility package. In addition, the EU Commission aims at “boosting disruptive military innovation” and “strengthening the European defence industry through a roadmap for the transformation of the defence industry”. This is the background that has been presented in Brussels today by the EU Commission, which allocated a wide share of its offices and facilities to this end. “By creating – the wide documentation states – a military mobility space within the EU by 2027, the set of measures for military mobility will bring the European Union closer to a ‘military Schengen’, making the transfer of troops and military equipment across Europe faster, safer and more coordinated”. Kaja Kallas, High Representative of the EU, stated: “The fast movement of Europe’s militaries is essential for Europe’s defence. Defence readiness fundamentally depends on whether you can get your tanks and troops to where you need them, when you need them. Today, we are proposing an emergency system for cross-border military transport and an initiative to pool member countries’ transport to make moving troops easier across the continent. Europe is facing unprecedented security threats”.
