Spain: bishops in plenary. Council of Nicaea, joint declaration with other Christian denominations expected

The Spanish bishops will hold their 128th Plenary Assembly from 18 to 21 November at the headquarters of the Spanish Bishops’ Conference (CEE) in Madrid. The session will begin with a speech by the President of the CEE, Mgr Luis Argüello, at 10:00 am tomorrow. Mgr Giuseppe Commisso, secretary of the nunciature, will then take the floor on behalf of the Apostolic Nuncio to Spain, Mgr Piero Pioppo. According to the CEE’s website, an ecumenical celebration will take place at the Almudena Cathedral to mark the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea on Thursday, 20 November, at 8:00 pm. During the ceremony, a joint statement with other Christian denominations present in Spain will be made public. Among the main items on the plenary assembly’s agenda is the discussion and vote on the pastoral guidelines for the four-year period 2026-2030. Proposals for the implementation of synodality in dioceses will also be evaluated. The Assembly will also examine the annual report by the advisory commission on the comprehensive reparation plan for abuse victims, as well as the FOESSA Foundation’s report on poverty and social exclusion. Other items on the plenary agenda include a new communication plan, an initiative on the presence of lay people in public life, a reflection on the current situation of Spanish seminaries, and the proposal for a second edition of the bishops’ ongoing formation days.
