The European Commission has launched two European calls for proposals to support cross-border journalism collaborations and media pluralism, making a total of €13.8 million available under the Creative Europe programme. The first call, which has a budget of €6.9 million, with a maximum of €2 million per two-year project, aims to “boost the resilience of the European news media sector as it faces multiple challenges, including the financial sustainability of professional journalism”. This is explained in a statement from the European Commission that will select collaborative journalism and cross-border partnership projects among media outlets. The second call, also worth €6.9 million, with a maximum of €2 million per two-year project, is open to organisations that can act as intermediaries to set up and distribute funding to local and regional media, community media, investigative journalism, or media specialised in public interest news. Today, the Commission explained, “traditional media struggle, jeopardising many smaller, independent media organisations”, which therefore need support to “improve their position, adapt their methods, continue providing a first-hand source of original reporting to citizens, help keep decision-makers accountable and ultimately contribute to a more diverse and independent media sector”. Proposals can be submitted until 4 February 2026.
