Council of Europe: Global Sumud Flotilla “civilian and non-violent” initiative. Words of condemnation for the situation in Gaza

Words of condemnation come from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) for the reported attacks and acts of harassment against the Global Sumud Flotilla: the flotilla was a “civilian and non-violent initiative” aimed at delivering humanitarian aid and drawing attention to the longstanding blockade of Gaza. The issue was debated in Strasbourg during an urgent debate. According to the resolution adopted by the Assembly, “the deliberate targeting” of civilians and the widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure “cannot be justified under the pretext of self-defence” and represent “grave violations of international humanitarian law”. The PACE called for “the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held in Gaza”, “an immediate, permanent and unconditional ceasefire”, and “the immediate and unhindered entry and distribution of humanitarian aid”. During the debate, reference was also made to the “humanitarian catastrophe” and to Israel’s “deliberate obstruction” of humanitarian aid, which constitutes “a grave breach of international humanitarian law”. The Assembly also condemned “the exceptionally high number of journalists killed or injured in Gaza” and invited Council of Europe member states to devise and put in place special rehabilitation programmes for Palestinian children.
