Eurostat: 9 million small farms in the EU. Half of them in Eastern countries

There are 9.1 million farms in the EU that employ over 13 million people. 64% of these farms are small (under 5 hectares), 29% are 5 to 50 hectares, and 7% are over 50 hectares. 32% are in Romania, 14% are in Poland, 12% in Italy, 10% in Spain, 6% in Greece, and the remaining 26% are located in other EU countries. These are the figures that the European Statistical Office Eurostat has gathered in the brochure “A look at European farms – agricultural census results”, which contains a series of essential information on European farms, their activities, and those who work there. Only 6% of farm managers are younger than 35; 14% are aged between 35 and 44; 22% between 45 and 54; 24% between 55 and 64; and 33% are 65 years old or more. In 48% of farms, the owner and manager are the same person. 72% of farm workers are family members, of whom 68% are men and 32% are women. The census, which is carried out every 10 years and whose results are contained in the brochure, also showed that 38% of farms produce food for their own use. As for the use of farmland, 62.3% is arable land for crops, 30.5% is used as permanent grassland, and just over 7% is allocated to permanent crops (vines, groves, orchards…). The 32-page brochure includes graphs and data for the 27 EU countries.
