EU: 36 thousand young people getting ready to discover Europe with a free travel pass

Today, the EU Commission announced that 35,762 18-year-old boys and girls will receive a free travel pass “to explore the diversity of the continent, learn about its cultural heritage and history, and connect with young people from all over Europe”. This initiative is part of DiscoverEu, launched in 2018 and providing young travellers with an opportunity to discover Europe either on their own or in groups of up to five people, mainly by train. Successful applicants in this year’s Programme will be travelling between March 2025 and May 2026. Glenn Micallef, Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture and Sport, stated: “DiscoverEU is a life-changing experience. Every train station, every café, every new face contributes to your story. You don’t just see Europe, you live it. To all young explorers with a ticket: Get started and take advantage of this enriching opportunity!”. As part of the Erasmus+ Programme, this round of applications for DiscoverEu was open to young people living in the member states who turned 18 in 2024, as well as those living in third countries associated to Erasmus+.
