The Catholic Church in Luxembourg will live a double Jubilee in 2025. Indeed, a Marian Jubilee will be celebrated alongside that of the universal Church. It was 8 December 1624 when the inhabitants of the country asked for the protection of the Virgin Mary and tried to follow in her footsteps. The official opening – marking 400 years after such a significant day for the Church in the Grand Duchy – will be on Sunday 8 December at 10.30 a.m. in the capital’s cathedral, where Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich will celebrate a Pontifical Mass. Then a procession with our Lady of Luxembourg, Comforter of the Afflicted, will take the statue to the Glacis Chapel, where it will remain until 15 December: by “symbolically” accompanying “Our Lady, we will express our desire to choose her again as our Mother and Protector”. During the week, various prayer initiatives will take place in the chapel and much more. Prayer and evangelisation initiatives and events will continue in the following months. The Marian Jubilee will end on 25 May 2025 at the end of the traditional prayer Octave that the Archdiocese dedicates to the Virgin.
