Austria: Week for Life. In Salzburg, the Archbishop celebrates with children in the Cathedral

As part of the programme of the Week for Life in Austria, the Archbishop of Salzburg and President of the Austrian Bishops’ Conference, mgr. Franz Lackner, officiated Mass with children and families in the Cathedral of Saints Rupert and Vergilius. The child-friendly “Service for Life” that was held on Sunday 21st June was designed to be “interactive”. In particular, children had a chance to speak of God with the Archbishop as he prowled through the benches and the aisles of the Cathedral, where the little devotees were sitting on the floor, in a festive climate. Archbishop Lackner explained to children that “every person has been created perfect” and is called to “use his abilities to help others and bring them joy”. In his conversation with the children, he compared such task to a treasure chest. “We are both the treasure and the chest. What do we put in a treasure chest? Something beautiful, something good and precious: love for ourselves and for God as well as our prayers. In a nutshell: let’s give joy to God and let’s be good to our neighbours”, mgr. Lackner said. At the end of the service, some crosses were blessed, given to all children, and then displayed in the Bishop’s garden, where playgrounds and a snack were awaiting them. The “Week for Life“ is a yearly initiative of the Austrian Catholic Church. Dioceses, institutions and organisations take part in it with a wide range of events, mainly targeted to families, pregnant women, children, elderly people, and people with special needs.
