Romania: Bishops’ Assembly. On the agenda, youth pastoral care, family life, consecrated life and missions

Pastoral care for youth and families, consecrated life and missions were some of the items on the agenda of the Plenary Assembly of the Romanian Episcopal Conference (CER) that took place in Alba Iulia, Romania, from May 11th to 13th. The Assembly was hosted by the Archdiocese of Alba Iulia, under the aegis of the Memorial Year to celebrate the Venerable Marton Aron (1896-1980), Bishop of Alba Iulia, who was persecuted by the atheist Communist regime. The opening of the Assembly was also attended by the Apostolic Nuncio to Romania mgr. Giampiero Gloder, the Secretary of State for Religions Ciprian Olinici, Father Luis Okulik, Secretary of the Social Pastoral Commission of the Council of Bishops’ Commissions of Europe (CCEE), and a delegation from the German organisation Renovabis. On officiating Mass on May 11th, mgr. Gloder sent Pope Leo’s greetings and blessing to the Romanian Bishops. In turn, mgr. Laszlo Bocskei, President of CER, pointed out that the Romanian Bishops feel encouraged by the Venerable Marton Aron’s story. “We stay united – he said – in defending the truth and serving with love”. In addition, during the Assembly, the Roman and Greek Catholic Bishops of Romania looked into proposals for changing CER’s Statutes and internal regulations and appointed the Greek Catholic Bishop of Oradea, mgr. Virgil Bercea, to sit in the Permanent Council. The next Assembly will take place on September 21-23 and will be hosted by the Archeparchy of Alba Iulia and Fagaras.
