The crisis in the Middle East and energy security, the EU’s new long-term budget, Ukraine and files on fundamental rights and digital technology will be the focus of the plenary sitting of the European Parliament taking place in Strasbourg from April 27th to 30th. On Tuesday, the MEPs will outline a mandate for the negotiations on the forthcoming 2028-2034 long-term budget, based on a record-breaking proposal of over two billion euros, and will also vote on the political guidelines for the 2027 annual budget, the last one planned. On Wednesday, the spotlight will be on international issues, with the European Parliament, the EU Council and the EU Commission discussing the European strategy for the Middle East and the impact of the crisis on energy security and prices, starting with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. A debate about the situation in southern Lebanon, with calls to a sustainable ceasefire and greater humanitarian access, has also been planned. Speaking of the war in Ukraine, a debate is due to be held on Tuesday about accountability for Russia’s attacks on civilians and the risk of “normalising” relations with Moscow, even in sports. Then, the plenary sitting will zoom in on the rule of law and fundamental rights in the EU, with two reports decrying pressures on the independence of the judicial system, freedom of the media and civic space being voted on next Wednesday, and a report asking for a European definition of the crime of rape based on lack of consent. Priorities also include a resolution against cyber-bullying and online harassment.
