Middle East: Costa (European Council), “a lasting ceasefire to pave the way to peace”

“The European Union stands in full solidarity with the countries and people of the Gulf. Iran’s attacks have violated their sovereignty and territorial integrity. And this is unacceptable”. These are words that the President of the European Council António Costa said to the press after his two-day visit to the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The purpose of his visit was simply to “listen to the leaders and get their assessment of the current situation”, went on Costa, grateful for the way the Gulf Countries took care of European citizens living in the region. The EU has been in the region as a “reliable partner”, on which the Gulf Countries can rely on and get support from, based on two priorities: “work towards a stable and lasting ceasefire that could pave the way to sustainable peace in the region” and “restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz”. The EU calls to use the momentum created by the ceasefire between the United States and Iran, brokered by Pakistan, to face the concerns of the international community about Iran (nuclear programme, ballistic missile programme, support to violent groups, and blockade of international sea lanes). Then, Costa spoke of the situation in Lebanon, where Hezbollah “poses an existential threat for Lebanon and a dangerous destabilising factor for international peace and security”. Support for President Aoun’s decision to ban Hezbollah’s military activities, because disarming Hezbollah “is the only sustainable solution for restoring Lebanon’s international stability”.
